David played most sports while at school and university, enjoying most success in tennis. He won the Welsh Junior Doubles title in 1968 and in 1969 captained the Nottingham University tennis team.
In 1970 he graduated from Nottingham with a Degree in Law, qualified as a solicitor in 1973 and began practising in Swansea that year.
From 1973 to 1984 David umpired at Wimbledon, taking charge of the Men’s Doubles Final in 1983 and the Men’s Singles Final, between Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe, in 1984. He umpired at numerous other tournaments and Davis Cup ties.
He began broadcasting on sport in 1979 after winning a competition organised by BBC Wales. He became a full-time broadcaster in 1984 when he joined BBC Radio Sport in London, and was appointed its tennis correspondent in 1990. Two years later he joined the BBC Television commentary team.
David also commentates on tennis for Eurosport, ESPN Star Sports of Singapore and a number of other television stations around the world. He is a director and part owner of Tennis Radio Network Limited. He also commentates on badminton, rowing and rugby union.
He has worked on and provided voice-overs for various television magazine programmes on golf, rugby union and tennis.
He writes regularly for a number of tennis magazines and occasionally for newspapers including The Guardian and The Observer.

1984 - 1992 BBC Radio Sport commentator, presenter & reporter. Main sport covered was tennis. Appointed tennis correspondent in September 1990. Other sports covered included rugby union, badminton, snooker, squash, ice hockey, rowing, football, skiing, skating and American football. Presented Sports desk on BBC Radio stations and programmes, such as soccer specials on Radio 5 and Test Match Special on Radio 3.
